Ghanaian Actress Yvonne Nelson Regrets Her Past Academic Attitude
Ghanaian actress, film producer and entrepreneur Yvonne Nelson has publicly admitted that she regrets not giving her education the seriousness it deserved while she was younger. In a recent interview with Joy FM, she revealed that her early involvement in the entertainment world came at the expense of her studies.
Nelson shared that during her time in Senior High School (SHS), she would perform on stage every Saturday, a commitment she cherished, but one that left very little time for her schoolwork. Because of this, she failed some of her SHS exams and had to re-sit certain papers. Reflecting on that period, she said:
“I was so into entertainment that I didn’t take my schooling serious … I regret not paying attention to my books … You can easily mess up and not make it to university.”
Nelson didn’t stop at SHS, she later attended Central University for her tertiary education. However, balancing her academic duties with her acting career proved to be extremely challenging. As she explained, “It wasn’t easy mixing sets with classes … Nigerian producers were giving me juicy offers … I was torn between accepting the offers or not.” Despite the pressure, she prioritized her education, refusing to defer her studies so she could continue acting.
She said she was genuinely proud when she finally graduated, noting that her academic journey had been tough but meaningful.
Beyond her personal regret, Nelson also used her experience to send a message to younger people: she strongly urged teenagers and students today to take their education seriously. In her words, education is a legacy, “that is the only legacy their parents can really give to them.”
In another revealing moment, Nelson recalled how her friends once labeled her a “failure” because she initially couldn’t pass her WASSCE exams. That criticism motivated her to rewrite the failed exams, and she eventually found her way to university.
