A Final year student of CRUTECH was shot dead

A Final year student of the Cross Rivers University of Technology CRUTECH, was shot dead yesterday morning at about 11.30 am shortly after he finished his final year first semester examination. He was said to have been stepping out of the examination hall when he was accosted by some fierce looking men who shot him at close range. The men fled the scene immediately.

Students of the institution believe it is a cult-related murder. However the nomenclature of the deceased has not been disclosed yet but the remains of the deceased has been taken to the state mortuary. Cross River University of Technology also known as CRUTECH is a state-owned higher institution located in Calabar, a local government area of Cross River State, Southern Nigeria.

The University was established in 2002 after the merging of three higher institutions: The Polytechnic of Calabar, The College of Education and Ibrahim Babangida College of Agriculture. It offers degree courses at undergraduate and post graduatelevels. The university currently has campuses in Calabar, Obubra, Ogoja and Obudu.

Confraternities in Nigeria are secret societies like student groups within higher education that have recently been involved in illegal and violent activities. The exact death toll of confraternity activities is unclear. One estimate in 2002 was that 250 people had been killed in campus cult-related murders in the previous decade, while the Exam Ethics Project lobby group estimated that 115 students and teachers had been killed between 1993 and 2003.

Students and especially undergraduates have been advised to desist from cult activities to preserve their lives and future. The deceased could be the only son, first son, the brightest in his family or whichever case but he had just cut his destiny short as a result of cult activities May his soul rest in peace.
