BB Naija 2019, Should This Program Continue?

BBNaija 2019 Housemates

Big Brother Naija, formerly known as Big Brother Nigeria, is a Nigerian reality competition television series, based on the Big Brother television franchise and founded by Endemol in which 12 to 14 contestants live in an isolated house and compete for a large cash prize worth $58,252.43 equivalent to 21,000,000 Nigerian Naira at the end of the show by avoiding being evicted from the house by viewers.

The first season of the show first aired on DStv Channel 37 from March 5 to June 4, 2006. The voting results were verified by the auditing company of Alexander-Forbes. A second season of the series premiered on January 22, 2017, and a third season debuted on January 28, 2018. BBnaija has started airing since June 30, 2019. Unlike previous years, the stage is set in Abuja, Nigeria. The Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, Mr John Ugbe, disclosed on Sunday, June 23, 2019 that the winner of the new season of the reality show will be given N60m worth of prizes.

BBnaija is organized on the foundation of “reality”. It's a social experiment which aims to put together people of diverse backgrounds, culture and experiences to live and work together thereby promoting unity in diversity thus, the major motivation of the show. Housemates are allowed and encouraged to live their “normal lives”. They are free to do anything as long as it doesn’t contravene the house rules. This has so far been the reason for misconception of the idea of freedom leading to various deviances in character by most bbnaija housemates overtime.

Throughout the periof of the show, contestants are referred to as "housemates”.They are usually picked from a pool of applicants, who show interest in participating in the show.Over the years, there have been a total of 50 house mates or more.Housemates must be open minded adults who expressly accept to abide by all the laws of the house. No one is supposed to hurt another by any form of violence, even as the housemates live together for the period of time, they are admonished to live in peace, tolerating each other's shortcomings and deal with each other in love to facilitate the whole idea of unity in diversity which is the core motive of the programme. The show is hosted in South Africa while it's pre-selection exercises are held in locations across Nigeria.

Within the duration of the Big Brother Naija show, housemates stay in the Big Brother House without any sort of contact from the outside world, they are provided whatever they need in the house. They are not allowed to carry any electronic gadgets into the house of course for security reasons. The official language allowed for communication is English. The use of vernacular or any “coded” means of communication is prohibited, except where necessary of course. Meanwhile, “Big Brother” or “Biggie” (an invisible voice represented by a big eye) is the presumed “owner” of the BB Naija house.

Biggie is regarded as omni-present within the house. The eye on the logo signifies that he sees everything. He has the ultimate powers to make laws and decide the general daily administration of the house, he adds also unexpected twists to spice up the fun. It is worthy of note that three editions of the show have been successfully held. The previous editions have been judged to be very successful, hence the huge following across the continent. However, beyond the applauds have been series of criticisms, especially due to the many recorded obscene scenes.
